Cosmetic Dental Treatment Aftercare

Many cosmetic dental treatments can be used to restore the appearance of a person's smile. Prosthetics like implants, crowns, veneers, bridges and dentures are often used to restore the look of a patient's teeth. Treatments like dental bonding and teeth whitening can help improve the color of your smile.

The way the dentist decides to go about restoring the patient's teeth often determines the type of aftercare that is required. Let us look at the aftercare requirements for some of the most commonly performed procedures by cosmetic dentists:

Aftercare for common cosmetic dental procedures

1. Crowns

Crowns are arguably the most commonly used dental device. This is due to the fact crowns can be used for cosmetic and restorative purposes. Dentists love being able to kill two birds with one stone. When it comes to cosmetic dental procedures, crowns are often used to cover up teeth with severe stains and discoloration that cannot be whitened with bleaching agents. Crowns can also restore the appearance of teeth that have been badly damaged by decay.

Crowns do not have any specialized cleaning requirements. Simply practicing good oral hygiene and getting regular checkups is all that is needed to ensure crowns last up to 25 years.

2. Dentures

Dentures improve a patient's smile by replacing missing teeth. There are partial dentures for those who are only missing some of their teeth and full denture sets for those who have lost all of their natural teeth. Dentures are the most cost-effective way to replace all of a patient's natural teeth.

Dentures do come with strict maintenance requirements though. The patient needs to take the device out each night, clean it and then soak it denture solution. The patient also needs to maintain good oral hygiene to keep their mouth healthy.

3. Bridges

Bridges replace missing teeth or fill up gaps in a person's smile. The bridge contains artificial teeth, and it is typically anchored to the teeth on each side of the missing set of teeth.

Dental bridges are typically fixed, and they do not require any special cleaning. There is a tendency for food to get stuck in them, but you can easily remove debris with a water flosser.

4. Veneers

These thin porcelain shells make it possible for anyone to have a perfect smile. They go over the front of the patient's teeth, hiding any discoloration and stains. The installation of veneers requires some part of enamel to be removed to make room for the prosthetic, so the patient's teeth might be sensitive for a few days.

Veneers look just like real teeth, so it is pretty much impossible to tell when a person has them. There are no specialized cleaning requirements for veneers, but patients should avoid chewing on hard things.
