7 Kids Dental Hygiene Tips From A Dentist for Kids

Struggling to keep your child’s mouth in order? Have they had a problem with cavities or other oral issues? We have compiled seven tips from a dentist for kids, also known as a pediatric dentist. This is the ideal person to get your dental hygiene tips from, as a pediatric dentist focuses specifically maintaining children’s oral health. Some parents do not think it is that important for their kids to take good care of their baby teeth. This logic cannot be further from the truth. When a kid properly takes care of their baby teeth, they are much more likely to not have any issues when their permanent teeth grow in.

According to the American Dental Association, kids love imitating their parents, so making a fun family routine for dental care a great idea.

Dental tips for your child’s teeth

Here are seven dental hygiene tips, from a pediatric dentist, for kids to properly maintain their teeth and gums. Follow these guidelines with your children, and you will set them up for success well into their adult lives.

Toothbrush

Let every kid pick out their own soft-bristled toothbrush. Choosing allows the child to feel in control. Have them brush their teeth by holding the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle and then gently performing small circular strokes all along the gum line.

Flossing

Kids should gently floss in between their teeth at least once a day. Gently slide the floss back and forth in between the teeth to remove any hidden food particles. You may see some pink in the sink after the first few times, but the bleeding will stop once the child’s mouth is used to the floss.

Toothpaste

Every kid should use a toothpaste containing fluoride that meets American Dental Association approval requirements.

Brushing Frequency

Your child should brush at least twice a day, especially after meals. They also should floss least once per day.

Avoid Sugary Foods

These foods cause bacteria to grow on the teeth which can cause plaque and tartar buildup. If your child does eat these foods, then brushing the teeth or drinking water immediately afterward is necessary.

Provide Healthy Foods

Consistently offering your kids new and healthy food choices will not only be good for their overall diet, but it will keep their mouth healthy as well. Leafy greens and vegetables are great choices here.

Regular Checkups

Be sure to prioritize your child’s routine dentist visits. Get them in the habit of visiting the dentist, so they do not develop a fear of appointments.
